Free Psychotherapy In Exchange For Volunteerism
About eight years ago, RICHARD SHULMAN, a Hartford area psychotherapist, founded a West Hartford base nonprofit Volunteers in Psychotherapy to address the problems with access to and privacy of psychotherapy he saw with many patients. Psychotherapy patients get around the rules set by their insurance providers, which Shulman says often prevent them from getting the care they really need, by earning their psychotherapy hours in another way: volunteering.
People "feel like they're honestly earning their therapy" while contributing to their communities, which is therapeutic in itself, Shulman says. Patients receive one hour of psychotherapy in exchange for four hours of volunteering at the organization of their choice. Psychotherapists are compensated, but at much less than their normal rate.
East of the River holistic psychotherapists might like to consider participating. It might also be a good model for offering an introduction to other modalities. Anyone interested?
