October 2009

Glorious October

As I write this our New England autumn is at its best with vibrant colors and crisp days. Definitely a time to listen to Eckhart Tolle and stay focused in the present moment, not look ahead to the colder months.

Activities at the centers and schools are also at their most vibrant in October and early November. In September things are just gearing up and in late November they are winding down for the holidays. In October there is much to choose from. But feedback from teachers is that class size is smaller due to the economic downturn and some classes have been cancelled. When you see something that really interests you be sure to reserve space early and try to bring a friend. That way you won't be disappointed.

In this issue we formally introduce you to The Alliance For Holistic Living. You may have seen some of their events referred to throughout the year. Its purpose is to provide service and education to the community and most events are free. I'm part of The Alliance and serve in the Wisdom Circle, as do a number of other area community leaders. It's an interesting experiment to bring awareness of holistic options to the community and I hope you both take advantage of our events and support the effort.

Organization Profile - The Alliance For Holistic Living

The Alliance For Holistic Living is a new group consisting of centers, practitioners and interested community members, focused East of the Connecticut River with the mission of promoting holistic living in our communities through collaborative ventures with integrity and respect for all creation. The focus is on service, public education and community building.

Formed earlier this year the group sponsors community projects, healing clinics, organization educational presentations and public workshops. All have been free to the public with Alliance members donating their time and talents.

A monthly series of presentations by members on the third Thursday night of each month begins in November and will continue indefinitely. The first workshop is on Thursday, November 19 in Manchester. Check the Profile page and our Calendar for details.

If you would like to learn more about the group or might be interested in joining, The Alliance is holding an Open House and Potluck at the Ravenwood Holistic Wellness Center in Manchester on Sunday, November 8 from 4-6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Blog: Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol"

Dan Brown’s long awaited follow-up to “The Da Vinci Code” was published recently. What drew me to run out and buy a copy of “The Lost Symbol” was Lynne McTaggart’s blog detailing how the book referenced her work and included some detail on what Brown calls the ‘noetic sciences.’ Lynne McTaggart is the author of “The Field” and “The Intention Experiment,” which delve into the research and researchers in the field of consciousness. The science side of spirituality is a subject I’m very interested in and to see it woven into popular fiction is exciting.

If you liked “The DaVinci Code” you’ll probably like “The Lost Symbol” too as it has the same basic plot outline, pacing and similar characters. The Masons replace the Templars and the action takes place in Washington, DC instead of Europe. This time they are searching for a lost pyramid that leads to the secret of the Ancient Mysteries, which gives power to whoever has it. Not as esoteric and controversial as a continuation of the bloodline of Jesus, but still a fun read. Lots of descriptive information about Masonic history, ritual and symbolism and how ancient wisdom was encoded in Washington’s layout and architecture.

On September 26 I was a guest on RAY GENOVESE's radio program where we talked about both my story and the history of new age and holistic Connecticut. In this blog I talk about the show, which is available for listening online.

Taste! Organic Connecticut is an annual celebration of local organic agriculture. It was held on a bright sunny Sunday in mid September at Manchester Community College near the bandstand. Sponsored by the Northeast Organic Food Association (NOFA), this event offers the opportunity to purchase fresh vegetables and fruits, honey, maple syrup, organically grown plants and items from local crafters and herbalists. Hourly workshops, delicious grilled vegetables for lunch, information tables, live music and children’s events all added to the charm of the day. See it for yourself on our new album.
