Happy New Year!
The year 2008 is numerically a '1' year; a year of new beginnings. Being January this is the time we review the past year and make resolutions and set goals for the new year. We resolve to lose weight, get more exercise, get our act together, be a nicer person or to take more time for ourselves.
I have a suggestion that just might help you at every level. Look through the activities listed on our website and do just one thing each month - attend a program, take a class, join a support group or enjoy one of our community events. When you take even one step along a spiritual path sychronicities begin to happen. That one step sets your intention and good things manifest; and a monthly commitment keeps you on the path. So don't procrastinate - choose anything, put it on your calendar, and take that first step.
We continue to add content to Conscious CT each month. In the paragraphs that follow we describe the addition of our blog and a new photo album.

Photo Gallery
An album of photos from December's Winter Solstice Celebration at Breathe ... more, llc in Tolland has been added to our Photo Gallery. It was a very well attended night of drumming led by DENNIS COTTON and dancing led by VICKY HANNON. It was such a good night that CHERYL JONES and CHERIE TRICE plan to do it quarterly beginning with the Spring Equinox on April 4.
We'll add albums of events as they occur and collections of other area activity during the year.
The gallery can be accessed from the Communication section of the website with new entries posted on the Home page.

Upcoming Community Events
Deep Winter doesn't have many community events, which we define as events that will bring over 100 people together. The larger fairs are outside our region, but I'll mention one as there is nothing else scheduled for the next several months. Then we'll look ahead to what is coming up in the Spring so you can mark your calendars early.
1- On Sunday, January 27 the Whole Health Expo will be held in Cromwell at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. This is an annual event that was produced by BARBARA HARDIE's Angel Connections for the past 10 years; but beginning this year will be produced by the same people that do the Whole Health Expos in Northampton, MA and other New England locations.

2- Mark your calendar for Friday, April 11 when the 1st Annual Celebrating Our Holistic Community will be held in East Hartford. It will be a combination cabaret and talent show, tribute and roast, and fund raiser for children. Each year someone who has contributed to the community will be honored and this year's honoree will be (blush) JON ROE. This is obviously a shameless promotion, but it is planned to be a fun evening that will bring much of the community together. Everyone welcome. More information will be posted on our website as the event comes together.

3- And it's not too soon to plan ahead for the Connecticut Herb Association's annual Herbfest on Saturday, June 7. If you have never been, it's a terrific outdoor annual festival and celebration of all things herbal. Mark your calendars and we'll provide more information in the coming months.

4- The following week on Saturday, June 14, a Holistic Pet Fair is planned at the Audubon Society in South Glastonbury. The event is being coordinated by JENIPHER YOUNG-HALL of Mahila's Children.
Check dates on our calendar for the above events. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Our Newest Conscious CT Feature Is Quixote's Blog
We've been planning to create a blog for this website since it went online in September, but I've been dragging my feet on it. The idea is to share ideas, opinions, information and observations that don't fit anywhere else on the site, while inviting you to provide feedback and your opinions.
Some of you know that I have an alter ego, JON QUIXOTE, who is a bit more aggressive and outspoken than I tend to be. When I hadn't made any progress on the blog by the first of the year, he took over and launched it himself. He writes in a different voice than you'll find in this newsletter, but I hope you'll enjoy it and find it of value.
The first three posts are:
- Introducing Jon Quixote's Blog
- Bang The Drum Loudly
- To Vote Or Not To Vote - That Is The Question
He'll probably add several new posts each month so check back from time to time or set up a feed. It will be accessible from our Home page or the Communication section. And please tell him what you think.

Blog Post: To Vote Or Not To Vote - That Is The Question
Spiritual people seem to be divided into two camps - those who choose to be engaged and those who choose not to be engaged. Both have good arguments for their choice.
Those who choose not to be engaged don't watch news or much else on television, don't read newspapers and don't get involved in activism or the political process including voting. Their rationale is that most of the news is negative, and television news in particular is designed to get you emotionally involved. This either makes you feel sad or gets you angry about things you have little influence over. Either way it effects you mentally and emotionally in unhealthy ways and depresses your immune system. It is better for you and those around you if you stay in a place of peace and harmony. You can better help the world by meditating, praying or sending out energy for world healing and peace. The argument makes good sense.
Those who choose to be engaged feel they have a responsibility to be on top of national and world events, to speak out on issues, to get involved in activism and the political process and do everything they can to make a difference in the world. They write letters, protest, support their favorite candidates, raise funds and are involved. They take Margaret Mead's observation to heart, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Eliminating A Few Of Life's Annoyances
You'll find a lot of goodies tucked away on our website. Here's a section to make your life a bit easier. You'll find information on eliminating junk mail, annoying phone calls and how to reach a real human being at most companies. That last item can be a real time and frustration saver if you find your self on a long hold or are tired of punching button after button trying to get an answer.
