Spring's Sprung

We've been very fortunate this year to have an early spring giving us the opportunity to get outside earlier in the season than we usually do. Hope you're taking advantage of it, I know I am.

To encourage you to go outside and to help you discover more about our region the Environment Section of Conscious CT has ideas on where to hike and, hopefully, you'll find some new favorites.

Also to encourage you to go out we started a new section this month - Favorite Restaurants. We all love going to lunch with friends and trying new places. We hope you'll send us your area favorites to share with readers.

Many of you know JENIPHER YOUNG-HALL, who left February 1 for an adventure in Guatemala. We thought it would be fun to follow her over the next year. She's using Facebook, so we set up a page that brings together her posted thoughts and photos.

And as always in the spring, there are lots of classes and activities at our centers. We've highlighted a few events, but check the Calendar as there are many more. And each Monday we highlight on our Home Page interesting events coming up that week.

Upcoming Events

There are no major events coming up East of the River in the next month, but we've highlighted a variety that might be of interest.

Clearpoint Center in Stafford opens for the season on Friday, April 9 with a Kirtan Concert featuring MIKE COHEN. Kirtan blends eastern spiritual traditions with western musical influences like jazz, funk, R&B, soul & gospel. And the practice cultivates Divine energy. Music begins at 7:30 p.m.

Michael Mirdad

The Greater Hartford Unity Church is hosting DR. MICHAEL MIRDAD on Sunday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 20. Dr. Mirdad is a World-renowned spiritual teacher, healer and author. He has facilitated thousands of classes, lectures, and workshops throughout the world on Mastery, Spirituality, Relationships, and Healing. He will present workshops here on Creating Fulfilling Relationships and An Evening of Miracles.

Earth Day is Thursday, April 22. Many events are planned in the week around Earth Day. Some are educational, others involve clean-ups or recycling. We'll add them to the Calendar as they are announced. Earth Day is a reminder of what we should be doing every day. You can find tips and links on Recycling and Conservation in the Environmental Section of Conscious CT.

Joan Lunden

The Annual Greater Hartford Women's Conference is held each Spring in South Windsor, this year on Wednesday, April 28. It's a full day of speakers, workshops and panels that includes a number of holistic speakers on stress and nutrition, as well as many other topics supporting women. The Luncheon Keynote this year is JOAN LUNDEN, Opening Keynote is REGINA BARRECA and the Emcee is KARA SUNDLUN from Channel 3.

Manchester Community College will hold its Annual Holistic Health Fair on Thursday, April 29 from 4 - 8 p.m. on the campus at the Art, Science and Technology Center. There will be about 25 exhibitors and a farmer's market. Ample parking in Lot C and admission is free. See link for directions and campus map.

Favorite Restaurants

We all love to meet a friend for lunch. We're looking for your favorite spots in our East of the River community. Places with healthy food, interesting menus, great locations or something special. A place you would take a visiting friend to show off the best of the area.

We've set up a web page for sharing favorites with readers. They don't have to be vegetarian, but should offer healthy choices and be special in some way. Email us with a few sentences on what's special and we'll post and share with readers.

To get started we've included some of our favorites - Zest in Tolland, Landmark Cafe in Manchester and Whole Foods Market in Glastonbury. Check them out and let us know what you think.

Jenipher's Journey

Many of you know JENIPHER YOUNG-HALL from Manchester, who after a stint with the Peace Corp in Nepal at age 50 came home and established Mahila, LLC to help the women she met make and sell jewelry with the proceeds going to girl's schools and cleft palate operations in Nepal.

Now a little older and with Mahila turned over to others, she has the travel bug again and on February 1 packed a single bag and left for a year or more in Guatemala to live with, help and learn from the people there. Guatemala, of course, is the home of the Mayans of 2012 calendar fame.

We thought it would be fun to follow Jenipher's adventures through her Facebook page, emails and photos. Anything might happen and we'll certainly learn about another country.

For the first two months of her journey go to Jenipher's Journey.

Hiking & Environmental Things

With Spring comes the urge to get outside to clean things up or just to go hiking. On the Conscious CT website, under the Environment tab we have a number of resources to support you.

To find a good trail to hike in the area visit our Land Preservation & Hiking page. On this page we list area Land Trusts, most of which have hiking. Our region of the state includes a bounty of farms, forests, lakes and streams. While visiting the page consider adopting one of the Trusts to support, they depend on their members and its a good way to get involved in protecting the things we value.

If you are cleaning the house or garage this is the time of year that hazardous waste collections begin again in most towns. Time to safely get rid of anything accumulated over the winter months. For links to information and dates for your town see our Reuse & Recycle page. You'll also find other information here on how to get rid of your unwanted 'stuff' locally.

While you're prowling our Environment Section check out Eliminating A Few Of Life's Annoyances. Here you'll find links to reduce junk mail, catalogs, annoying phone calls and how to connect by phone with a real human at hundreds of major companies.
