Learning To Be Social

New thing this month is putting Conscious CT on its own Facebook Page. Not being part of the hooked-in generation the whole social networking thing is a little uncomfortable. I'm from the era when we actually wrote and mailed letters. No, they weren't carried by the pony express - I was a little after that.

I've successfully ignored texting, tweeting, laptops, and most cell phone use. MySpace was for the kids. Last year I reluctantly joined Facebook to learn what it was all about, but have posted very infrequently because I can't imagine why anyone would be interested in the minutia of my life. It's just not that interesting. Finding old friends and following the adventures of my family have made it worthwhile.

That said I'm learning quickly that a Facebook Page for Conscious CT is a great tool. There are always interesting things going on around the region and rather than wait to share it in the monthly e-mail or hope you find it on the website, putting in on Facebook makes it instantly accessible and easy to pass on.

Like everything else about Conscious CT this too is an experiment. Let us know what you find interesting and what you want more of. We hope you'll 'like' it. Maybe there is something to this electronic information age.

With May the Farmers' Markets begin to open with the promise of fresh local fruit and vegetables around the corner. Also around the corner is the annual Herbfest, one of the regular big events in our region.

While roaming the Artists Open House in Hartford last fall I ran across a young artist who did the most wonderful fantasy illustration. And best of all he was from South Windsor so I could share his work with you. After you view DAMON HELLANDBRAND's page visit the other artists from our region. The pages are linked in a ring so that you can click through to all eight of our artists.

Upcoming Events

Each year we look forward to the Connecticut Herb Association's HerbFest on the first Saturday in June, this year it's held on June 5. This is an annual celebration of all things herbal and is a perfect kickoff to summer. Herbfest is held at Pleasantview Farms, off Route 83 in Somers. You'll find hourly workshops and weedwalks, delicious grilled vegetables for lunch, information tables, bake sale, 30 craft and herbal vendors, music and children's events.

Clearpoint Center in Stafford is hosting something a bit different - an Art Show, Dinner and House Concert with our favorite group MAD AGNES. The event will be held on Friday, May 21 beginning at 6 p.m. The artist is SHANNON MCCARTHY. You can see a sampling of her work in our Artists' Corner. Or you can just attend the concert, which begins at 7:30. Learn more about Mad Agnes at their website.

Join Us On Facebook

Conscious CT now has its own Facebook Page. I've had a personal page for the past year, but haven't been able to quite figure out what to do with it. However, I think Conscious CT has more to offer and that we can provide relevant postings for those of you who use the social networking site extensively. We're finding it a good place to post recent news, photos of area events and people, let you know of upcoming events of interest, point you to areas of the website you may have missed and perhaps we can have some interesting discussions on a variety of topics.

So check it out. We've posted photos of April's MCC Holistic Health Fair, links to a television spot, updates of Jenipher's Journey and will provide regular updates. Facebook Pages no longer has 'Fans'. Instead you become the equivalent of a Fan when you indicate you 'Like' the site. You will then get updates on your Wall.

I'd appreciate it if those of you who are heavy Facebook users would let us know what information would be most useful to you and how we can improve the page. You'll find a link on our Home Page.

Farmers' Markets Opening For The Season

Farmers' Markets are opening for the season. They are a great way to find healthy fresh food, support local agriculture and help the environment. As demand for better food has grown so has the number of markets. And many of the markets have become events in themselves with other vendors, music and activities for children.

In our Health Section we list information on all the Farmers' Markets in our region. The Markets in Ellington and Tolland opened in early May. Coventry opens on Sunday, June 7. Others open later or dates haven't announced yet.

Featured Artist: Damon Hellandbrand

Our featured artist this month is DAMON HELLANDBRAND. Damon is a self taught artist from South Windsor. Although he has had no formal art education, the style and originality of his compositions resonate with “pure raw talent”.

Damon attributes his creative abilities to a strong DNA. His grandfather was a master carpenter and his dad, an architect and engineer. Inspired as a young child through the 1977 version of Star Wars, Damon immediately knew he wanted to create creatures and worlds of fantasy through art. He has a flair for working with pencils, charcoal, watercolor, acrylics, inks, and anything he can get his hands on. Enjoy the sampling of astrology signs and faeries, then visit his website for more.

Out And About

Members of the Alliance For Holistic Living took part in the annual Rebuilding Manchester last month. The Alliance is a group of practitioners and supporters focused on service and education. As a service project they helped to paint a house in Manchester. It was a perfect day for painting and event though it took two coats many hands made the work go quickly.

Pictured in the photo are (back row) KURT RAVENWOOD, JOCELYN COLOMBE, JEFF BEHR, SHIRLEY GROMAN, and PAT HINCHEY; (bottom row) JON ROE, DEB RAVENWOOD AND CHARLIE EDGARTON. Not shown are DENISE LABARRE and KAREN AFFRICANO.
