Earth Day Everyday

Earth Day is this week and the weather has finally cooperated with some dry, warm days. It's time to work in the garden or get out for a hike. Also check out the activities of what should almost be called Earth Week.

As a community website we welcome input and ideas from you. Do you have expertise in an area you would like to share? We might be able to add it to the website. Do you have a blog that includes topics we cover? We can link to it. Would you like to help us keep up or enlarge a particular section? Do you have photos you would like to share?

We continue to add new goodies and features to the website. In fact we added a new symbol to indicate what is new or has changed. This month in addition to the Earth Day page we've added The Store Tour, a new guest artist and a blog page linking others in the community. If you're having trouble finding your way around or locating a particular page use the Site Map. You'll find the link at the bottom of every page taking you to a concise listing of all the pages on the website.

Upcoming Community Events

Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22. Many events are planned in the week around Earth Day. Some are educational, others involve clean-ups or recycling. We've created a page that includes many of the activities for the week taking place in Enfield, Glastonbury, Manchester and Storrs. Also see the calendar. Earth Day is a reminder of what we should be doing every day. You can find tips and links on Recycling and Conservation in the Environmental Section of Conscious CT.

A new page takes you on a guided tour of five unique shops in our area. You can easily visit them all in a day and stop for lunch along the way. We start in Enfield at Gayle's Thyme and make stops at ThistleGlass Crafts in Ellington and Magic Intent in Rockville on the way to Manchester, where we visit Meg's and Enchantments. And to help you find your way we've added an interactive map. Take a field trip and learn a little more about the people and places that make up Conscious CT.

Featured Artist: Shannon McCarthy

In February we added a new feature, Artists' Corner, where we introduce you to area artists and their work. This month we add the work of SHANNON MCCARTHY.

Shannon studied Linguistics and Classical Studies in college. Although she flirted with a number of other jobs she has returned to painting. Shannon's roots are in Florida and South Carolina, but her studio is now in Stafford Springs at Clear Point Center, where she is also the chef. Enjoy this introduction to her work.

Blog Post: Kids And TV

I've found myself in several conversations recently about the dangers of babies and young children being exposed to too much television. The problem is not so much keeping your own children safe as protecting your grandchildren and others close to you, whose parents think you are exaggerating the problem . . . or that you are a total nut case.

Television is a convenient baby sitter for tired or busy parents. Yes, they admit, it would be better for the kids to be getting more exercise, and the commercials and programming they are exposed to are probably not doing them any good, but it's not really that bad, or is it? New research is telling another story.

Natural Food Market Opens In Vernon

Sue Spector in the cafe

Except for Glastonbury, the natural food markets are all located outside our region. Now a new store, Nature's Grocer, has opened in Vernon on Route 30 near the Tolland town line, providing another option for food shopping. Opening in March they specialize in organics and natural foods as well as supplements, vitamins and environmentally friendly personal and household care products. Their kitchen is a dedicated wheat free, gluten free facility.

Nature's Grocer was established by BOB and SUE SPECTOR upon their respective retirements from careers in Hospital Administration and Teaching. Long-time foodies and Tolland county residents, they were looking to create a natural foods option for shoppers east of the river. A few years ago Sue was diagnosed with Celiac disease and as a result needed to completely rethink food choices and approaches to dining out as it quickly became clear that the opportunities for baked goods outside the home were virtually non-existent. Bob, a bake-a-holic, immediately began his quest to create appetizing baked goods that non-celiacs could appreciate as well. See the News Page for contact information.
