Earth Day
Many events are planned in the week around Earth Day, which is Tuesday, April 22. Some events are educational, others involve clean-ups or recycling. Visit earthday.net for more information. Enfield
On Tuesday, April 22 from 6-9 p.m. the CONNECTICUT HERB ASSOCIATION is holding an Earth Day Celebration and plant swap. Bring plants, cuttings, seedlings or seeds to share and take home for your own garden. Gayle's Thyme will also have plants available for purchase. Glastonbury
Celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 26 with the CONNECTICUT AUDUBON SOCIETY. Events include Peter Pan Players with a sampler from "The Wizard of Oz," music by Wild Notes and the Connecticut River Ramblers and live Birds of Prey. Admission to the event is free, but some activities do have a small fee. The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located at 1361 Main Street. For more information, call (860) 633-8402.
Manchester
A week long celebration at MANCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE, where there will be planned activities to bring awareness of the environment and to celebrate our earth.
Monday, April 21 Neil Hornish from the Compassionate Living Project will be speaking at 2:00 about the impact of consumer practices.
Tuesday, April 22 from 10-3. We will be removing trash and invasive plants from the detention basin in front of the tower (West Nile Pond) Dr. Todd Mervosh an expert in invasive plant management from the CT Agriculture Experiment Station will be on site from 1-3 pm to help identify plants and educate our students. The public is welcome. We will also be planting native trees and shrubs along the slope to reduce the need to mow in that area. The child development center will participate in a tree planting activity at 10:00.
Wednesday, April 23 from 1-3 Stephen Beck from "1000 friends of CT" will be speaking about sustainable development, urban sprawl, and transportation.
At 3:00 there will be a reception and opening of an Earth Art display.
Thursday, April 24 there will be a joint celebration of Cultural Diversity and Earth Day including: food, music, vendors including Eastern Mountain Sports to highlight their environmentally friendly products, tables with information will include: Citizens for a Greener Manchester and CT Transit, and 1000 Friends of CT; Composting information and demonstration; campus nature walks.
Storrs
On Tuesday, April 22 THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT will be hosting an Earth Day celebration. Events will include speakers, bands, organic product displays, environmental games, green technologies, educational booths, holistic hooping and much more! The annual Mount Sneaker drive and display will also be open, so bring your old sneakers to be recycled. A green fashion show and art display will be held in the evening. Event will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Fairfield Way at the University of Connecticut Storrs Campus.
